This week we look at the twilight years of the golden age of Filton when the town was one of the great aviation hubs of the world. Steve McEnnery was an O level student when he left school aged 16 and walked straight into a job at Filton working for what was then the British Aircraft Corporation (BAC). Filtons engineering facilities were so vast and varied that every single part, from instruments to windows, engines and wings were all made within a few square miles of the site. His work was on modification of the US F-111, VC-10 tankers and the little-known HS-146 which ended up being the Queens personal aircraft for royal trips and visits.
Anton Chaikin takes a look at the bigger picture, why it is that the United States and Britain have been de-industrialised. Is this something the government have done in the national interest or are other forces at work?
