In preparation, English is given a virtual reality exploration of the building. However, he unintentionally leaves the simulation room, assaulting various people while in the virtual environment (including battering the manager of a local cafe with two baguettes, and commandeering an Open Top Routemaster by pushing the tour guide off the top deck). Arriving at the mansion, English discovers Bhuletova is also a spy. He records evidence of Volta’s plans with her iPhone, but accidentally presses the wrong button, playing music from the phone and exposing himself. English escapes, hijacking a driving instructor’s car, returning to MI7 after being chased by Volta. However, English mixes up iPhones with a driving student, (Pauline McLynn) so fails to convince MI7 and the Prime Minister of Volta’s schemes. Hearing of both the restaurant and virtual reality incidents, she fires English, Bough and Pegasus and proceeds with the G12 meeting in Scotland. Bough convinces him to stop Volta anyway, enlisting his wife Lydia’s aid, a Navy captain of submarine HMS Vengeance, to arrive at Garroch Castle via Loch Nevis. Bhuletova attempts to kill Volta but, knowing she is a spy, he has immunized himself to her poison ring and removed her gun’s firing pin. Scaling the castle using a powered bodysuit, English intervenes before Volta can kill her, who escapes. Volta plans to extort the G12 leaders by threatening to shut down the internet. English calls MI7, forgetting Lydia’s warning about using a mobile near the submarine.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson spoke to the UN General Assembly in New York. 25 September 2019 But how we design the emerging tecnologies behind these breakthroughs – and what values inform their design –will shape the future of humanity. That is my point to you tonight my friends, my Excellencies – At stake is whether we bequeath an Orwellian world, designed for censorship, repression and control, or a world of emancipation, debate and learning, where technology threatens famine and disease, but not our freedoms. Seven decades ago, this General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights with no dissenting voices, uniting humanity for the first and perhaps only time behind one set of principles. And our declaration – our joint declaration – upholds “freedom of opinion and expression”, the “privacy” of “home or correspondence,” and the right to “seek…and impart information and ideas”. Unless we ensure that new technology reflects this spirit, I fear that our declaration will mean nothing and no longer hold. So the mission of the United Kingdom and all who share our values must be to ensure that emerging technologies are designed from the outset for freedom, openness and pluralism, with the right safeguards in place to protect our peoples. Month by month, vital decisions are being taken in academic committees, company boardrooms and industry standards groups. They are writing the rulebooks of the future, making ethical judgements, choosing what will or will not be rendered possible. Together, we need to ensure that new advances reflect our values by design. There is excellent work being done in the EU, the Commonwealth, and of course the UN, which has a vital role in ensuring that no country is excluded from the wondrous benefits of this technology, and the industrial revolution it is bringing about. But we must be still more ambitious. We need to find the right balance between freedom and control; between innovation and regulation; between private enterprise and government oversight. We must insist that the ethical judgements inherent in the design of new technology are transparent to all. And we must make our voices heard more loudly in the standards bodies that write the rules. Above all, we need to agree a common set of global principles to shape the norms and standards that will guide the development of emerging technology. So – here’s the good news – I invite you next year to a summit in London, a wonderful city, where by the way it is not raining 94 per cent of the time, and where at one stage – when I was Mayor of London – we discovered that we had more Michelin starred restaurants even than Paris. The French somehow rapidly recovered – by a process that I wasn’t quite sure was entirely fair. But we still have by far, in the UK, by far the biggest tech sector – fintech, biotech, meditech, nanotech, green tech – every kind of tech – in London – the biggest tech sector anywhere in Europe, perhaps half a million people working in tech alone. I hope you will come there, where we will seek to assemble the broadest possible coalition to take forward this vital task

Lost Boys documentary on ‘missing children’ of the Troubles to premiere A NEW documentary claiming that British intelligence may have protected those involved in the abduction and murder of children in Belfast during the Troubles is set to premiere next week. Directed by Des Henderson, Lost Boys: Belfast’s Missing Children is billed as “fresh investigative journalism uncovering an extraordinary tale of child disappearances and murder, MI5 interference, witchcraft and potential cover-up”. The Alleycats Films production features contributions from criminologist Robert Giles, journalist Martin Dillon and investigative reporter Chris Moore, who delve into possible links between five Belfast children who went missing from 1969 to 1974 and a network of paedophiles operating in the city, several of whom had connections to the infamous Kincora Boys’ Home and loyalist paramilitaries. Andy McDonald threatens to sue Tory MP over Hamas claim Andy McDonald was suspended as a Labour MP earlier this week Andy McDonald has threatened a fellow MP with legal action, over a social media post about his speech at a pro-Palestinian rally. He accused Conservative Chris Clarkson of making “a highly defamatory statement” about him on X. In his post, Mr Clarkson claimed Mr McDonald had sought “to justify the murderous actions of Hamas”. But Mr McDonald, who has been suspended as a Labour MP, said his speech had “called for peace”. Mr Clarkson has been approached for comment. The MP for Middlesbrough was suspended from Labour’s parliamentary party earlier this week, pending an investigation, after Labour said he had allegedly made “deeply offensive” comments at a demonstration on Saturday. He is sitting as an independent while the party investigation takes place, In his speech Mr McDonald, a former shadow minister under Jeremy Corbyn, said: “We will not rest until we have justice. Until all people, Israelis and Palestinians, between the river and the sea, can live in peaceful liberty.” The phrase “between the river and the sea”, which refers to the land between the River Jordan and the Mediterranean, features in a chant which has been heard at pro-Palestine protests. Critics of the chant, including Israel and most Jewish groups, argue it implicitly calls for the destruction of Israel. This interpretation is disputed by some pro-Palestinian activists who say that most people chanting it are calling for an end to Israel’s occupation of the West Bank and blockade of Gaza, not the destruction of Israel itself.

Far-right Finance Minister, Bezalel Smotrich, addressed an event in Paris on Sunday while standing by a map of “Greater Israel”, portraying Jordan as part of the self-proclaimed Jewish State. In a statement, Jordan’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Sinan Majali, termed Smotrich’s act as a “reckless incitement that is in violation of international norms and the Jordanian-Israeli peace treaty.” Jordan and Israel signed the Wadi Araba peace treaty in 1994, which brought an end to the state of war between the two countries since the first Arab-Israeli war in 1948. A deepfake usually involves an image or video in which a person or object is visually or audibly altered to say and do something that is fabricated. Hadid, whose father Mohamed Hadid is of Palestinian origin, has repeatedly shown solidarity with Palestine and even attended a protest in support of Palestine in London days after then-President Donald Trump recognised Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. The fake video of the runway star opens up a new front in the propaganda war being waged on social media. EU lawmakers have previously warned platforms including X, Facebook and TikTok of the rising tide of misinformation flowing from the Israel-Hamas war. Earlier this month, the Israeli government criticised Bella’s sister Gigi Hadid for her support of the Palestinian cause following Hamas’ attacks on Israel. Several A-list actors and politicians have previously been featured in deepfakes designed to promote scams and spread falsehoods. They include Tom Hanks, Boris Johnson, and Sir Keir Starmer, while female celebs have been the victims of deepfake pornography. The fake clip of Hadid was originally shared on Instagram by Israeli fashion model-turned-businesswoman Nataly Dadon and musician Yishay Raziel. However, it gained traction on X, which is facing an EU investigation over its alleged failure to crack down on fake content. The original post containing the video has been flagged as misleading by X’s voluntary fact-checkers.

But many New Zealanders still feel as though they do not know him. Luxon has confounded interviewers’ attempts to excavate strident or quirky details from his psyche, and resiles from discussions about his wealth – he is a millionaire – or his Christian faith, which he opines is misunderstood. “It seems it has become acceptable to stereotype those who have a Christian faith in public life as being extreme,” Luxon said in his maiden speech to parliament. He described his faith as “personal” and frequently rebuffed requests that he further explain his views. Dogged, too, by his anti-abortion stance, Luxon vowed in June that he would resign from the premiership rather than allow change to abortion’s legal status in New Zealand. Revelations that he had once attended an evangelical church roused suspicion in resolutely secular New Zealand – uncomfortable with public displays of faith – and prompted a short sideshow in election week about whether he believed dinosaurs existed (he does). Luxon said this year that he does not currently attend a church. Luxon – a married father of two adult children – was born in Christchurch, on New Zealand’s South Island, and grew up in the largest city, Auckland, where he attended state schools. His parents were a sales rep and a receptionist. Luxon gained a Master of Commerce degree at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch before joining the multinational firm Unilever. He worked for 18 years for the company in Australia, Britain, Canada and the US, before returning home to lead Air New Zealand.

Christchurch terror attack coronial inquest: 111 call about gunman’s ‘concerning’ manifesto sent minutes before mosque attack Six minutes after the Christchurch gunman sent a chilling manifesto to the Prime Minister’s office, a parliamentary staffer called 111 to report the “concerning” contents. That would be the first of many calls to 111 about the unfolding terror attack and its ghastly aftermath. The staffer told police that the email outlined an “attack on Christchurch”, threatened the use of firearms and explosive devices – and named three particular mosques. The sender – who gave his name as Brenton Tarrant – was “claiming some sort of political ideology” and his manifesto had “a white supremacist theme”. The parliamentary staffer told police while he suspected the email was a hoax, he was still concerned enough to alert them almost immediately after he received it. He never could have imagined what would happen next. That staffer who made that emergency call has given evidence today at the coroner’s inquest into the 2019 terrorist attack. His name cannot be published. He was contacted by a colleague on March 15, 2019, after the manifesto landed in a generic inbox for then prime minister Jacinda Ardern. The colleague was worried about the contents of the email – which was also sent to about 70 other recipients including then National leader Simon Bridges, other political figures and media at 1.33pm. After looking over the email – at 1.39pm – the staffer was equally concerned and called 111. “It will be a nutter, I’m sure,” he said to the operator.

It was far from the first time I’d seen it. I’d seen it on t-shirts sold by far-right fashion brands in France. I’d seen it in photos of shields held by white supremacists at the violent “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville in 2017. And, here in Ukraine, I’d seen it on the paraphernalia of the far-right Azov movement. It’s a sonnenrad (sunwheel) or black sun: a symbol commonly used by the far-right, including outright neo-Nazis, originally adapted from a mosaic on the floor on the SS Generals’ Hall. Seeing it in the context of Christchurch reminded me of just how interconnected the global far-right has become. A manifesto was sent to police believed to be sent from the Christchurch shooter. A wade through the swamp that is the manifesto shows a peculiar imagined version of Eastern Europe. And it is clear the shooter matters to some in that region’s far-right. But what’s been missed in some coverage of his travels are his specific travels through Eastern Europe, including the Balkans. Police in Croatia have stated that he was in the country between December 2016 and January 2017; some reports suggest that he also spent time in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Serbia. These visits are perhaps reflected in what was scrawled on the weapons allegedly used in the shooting.

I saw the body of two of the babies who were killed in that massacre. “I saw an old woman who was severely injured being carried by our relatives. I saw them all being taken to ambulances and I saw mutilated bodies. I saw all this at a metre’s distance.
