Barton House tenants demand council bosses pause their rent in tense scenes at City Hall Survey results are expected to show next week whether the tower block is safe to return to Tenants of Barton House urged council bosses to stop charging them rent during a tense public meeting at City Hall. Hundreds of people were evacuated from the tower block last month but many must still pay rent to Bristol City Council despite their homes being unsafe. Questions were also raised about what would happen to tenants if the building is found to be unsafe, with survey results expected next week. But the council is not expecting to rehouse the majority of evacuees staying in a hotel in the city centre for “the short or medium-term”. So far the evacuation is forecast to cost the council £3.5 million, and a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, December 5 heard details of how much has been spent. Barton House tenants used the meeting to ask council bosses about a rent pause and their long-term future. John Wisbey, acting chair of the Barton House tenants association, said: “We, the residents of Barton House, demand that there is rehousing for those who feel unsafe in the building, and everything should be done to support those who wish to remain within the building and support the community that has developed therein. “We would also like an independent investigation and rent to be paused for those currently paying it, because this is causing financial difficulty for those of us who are living in hotel accommodation. We also demand accountability and answers from the council. We need a timeline of how events unfolded from the moment the government made Bristol City Council aware of the defects of the building in 2017.” Many people living at Barton House have all or part of their rent covered by housing benefit. Chart showing Per cent of buildings damaged during conflict of Northern Gaza, Dresden, Cologne and Hamburg. “Dresden, Hamburg, Cologne some of the world’s heaviest-ever bombings are remembered by their place names,” said Robert Pape, a US military historian and author of Bombing to Win, a landmark survey of 20th century bombing campaigns. “Gaza will also go down as a place name denoting one of history’s heaviest conventional bombing campaigns.” Whole neighbourhoods have been levelled. By December 4, more than 60 per cent of the buildings in north Gaza had been severely damaged, according to analysis of satellite radar data by Corey Scher of CUNY Graduate Center and Jamon Van Den Hoek of Oregon State University. That rises to as much as 70 per cent of buildings in some districts. Across the whole of Gaza, between 82,600 and 105,300 buildings have been left in ruins, according to the estimate, which counts buildings where at least half the structure was damaged. By contrast, over the space of two years, between 1943 and 1945, the Allied bombing of 61 major German cities razed an estimated 50 per cent of their urban areas, according to Pape. One US military review from 1954 estimated 7,100 tonnes of allied munitions were dropped on Dresden, severely damaging 56 per cent of non-industrial buildings, half of homes, and killing about 25,000.

Hindus believe that Ayodhya, a city in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh, is the birthplace of one of their most revered deities, Lord Ram. Muslims say they have worshipped there for generations. The Supreme Court has now ruled that the site should be given to Hindus to build a temple there. Hinduism is India’s majority religion and is thought to be more than 4,000 years old. India’s first Islamic dynasty was established in the early 13th Century. What is the row actually about? At the centre of the row is a 16th-Century mosque that was demolished by Hindu mobs in 1992, sparking riots that killed nearly 2,000 people. US Joins 21 Other Countries In Pledge To Triple Nuclear Energy Capacity By 2050 The United States and 21 other countries from four continents signed a pledge at the United Nations climate summit on Dec. 2 to triple global nuclear energy capacity by 2050 from the levels recorded in 2020. The declaration was signed at the U.N. Climate Change Conference, also known as COP28, held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It recognizes “the key role of nuclear energy in achieving global net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 and keeping the 1.5-degree goal within reach.” “Core elements of the declaration include working together to advance a goal of tripling nuclear energy capacity globally by 2050 and inviting shareholders of international financial institutions to encourage the inclusion of nuclear energy in energy lending policies,” the U.S. Department of Energy stated. The countries that endorsed the pledge are the United States, Bulgaria, Canada, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Ghana, Hungary, Japan, South Korea, Moldova, Mongolia, Morocco, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom. In the declaration, the 22 signatory countries promise to “support the development and construction of nuclear reactors,” such as small modular and other advanced reactors for power generation. They pledged to “mobilize investments in nuclear power,” including through innovative financing mechanisms, such as engaging with shareholders of the World Bank, international financial institutions, and regional development banks.

Ukrainian ‘traitor’ MP is assassinated in Moscow by Kyiv hit squad who shot him in the head 18 months after he urged Putin to use weapons of mass destruction The body of Illia Kyva, 46, was discovered in the Moscow suburbs today Kyiv said it orchestrated the assassination of a pro-Kremlin Ukrainian politician today, after the body of an ex-lawmaker who had defected to Russia was found outside Moscow with a gunshot wound to the head. A source in Ukraine’s defence sector said that its SBU security services had orchestrated the assassination of Illia Kyva, a former Ukrainian lawmaker who was kicked out of parliament and defected to Russia weeks after Moscow launched its military offensive last year. Kyva’s body was discovered in the Moscow suburbs today. His death came 18 months after he urged Putin to use weapons of mass destruction against Ukraine amid growing fears that Russia could resort to using nuclear weapons. ‘An unknown person fired shots at the victim from an unidentified weapon. The man died on the spot from his injuries,’ Russia’s Investigative Committee said in a statement. It said it had opened a case into his death. Speaking on national TV, Ukraine’s military intelligence spokesperson Andriy Yusov said: ‘We can confirm that Kyva is done. Such a fate will befall other traitors of Ukraine, as well as the henchmen of the Putin regime.’
