In the first hour, Julia Lonergan, author of "The Haunting of Mission Santa Cruz, Mexico, 1708 to 1876, Volumes 1 and 2", spoke about the ancient temples and the haunted missions of Santa Cruz , Mexico. Lonergan , also discussed the continuing Mexican civil war between the drug lords and the Mexican government. Many women and children have disappeared and some murdered as the violence continues to escalate.
In the second hour, Lynette Mike, President, Santa Cruz Indian Council and Program Coordinator of the Native TANF Program of Santa Cruz County, discussed the history, mission and activities of the Santa Cruz Indian Council. Mike also discussed the role of the White Bison, the Native American Wellbriety Movement in overcoming addictions, racism and poverty. Both TANF and White Bison break down the barriers that keep families from moving toward self sufficiency and cultural vitality.
Mike spoke openly about the challenges she faced as an "urban Indian" and the ways in which she overcame them.
