IN THE 1960S AND 70S THE BLACK PANTHER PARTY WAS A VOICE OF POLITICAL RADICALISM IN BLACK NEIGHBORHOODS, BUT THEIR SOCIAL WORK IN THESE COMMUNITIES IS NOT WIDELY PUBLICIZED.
A RECENT BOOK BY A COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY SOCIOLOGY PROFESSOR, "BODY AND SOUL: THE BLACK PANTHER PARTY AND THE FIGHT AGAINST MEDICAL DISCRIMINATION" DOCUMENTS THE IMPORTANT ADVANCES ACHIEVED BY THE ORGANIZATION IN OUTLINING THE STRUCTURES AND VALUES OF A SOCIALIZED HEALTH SYSTEM IN THE UNITED STATES.
ON FRIDAY, ALONDRA NELSON CAME TO THE BRECHT FORUM IN MANHATTAN TO DISCUSS AND CONTEXTUALIZE HER WORK. WBAI CAUGHT UP WITH HER LATER TO GATHER ADDITIONAL COMMENTS ON THE TOPIC AND HE FILED THIS REPORT:
