This week we chomp into A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, The first Iranian Vampire Western ever made! Ana Lily Amirpourâs debut basks in the sheer pleasure of pulp. A joyful mash-up of genre, archetype, and iconography, its prolific influences span spaghetti westerns, graphic novels, horror films, and the Iranian New Wave⦠And it goes a bit like this. The film opens with a scene of a vast wasteland, Bad City, a quasi ghost town wasteland populated with oil drilling machines and a palpable sense of being. Here, Arash a lonely teenager lives with his drug addicted father who consistently owes money to his dealer. Arash tries his best to make a living working as a gardener for a rich family, where heâs managed to keep the wolves at bay, as well as save enough for a sweet ride! Unknown to him though, the city is inhabited by an equally lonely young vampire whose name we never learn. She acts as a sort of vigilante, choosing to feed from those who she considers âbadâ, killing them without mercy. When one night she runs into Arash, she will finally know the possibilities that love offers, and that even in Bad City, a small glimmer of hope can shine⦠Listen to see how we âRound tableâ this one.
